Ill-Fitting Condoms

March 1st, 2010

Condoms are twice as likely to split and prevent both partners from reaching orgasm if the condom does not fit correctly.

In the last three months it has been proven that 45 % of men aged between 18-67 use condoms that are not the right size. Not only does this increase the chance of the condom splitting it also includes other difficulties, it interferes with performance, double the chance of erection loss and being more likely to remove the condom before climax as it has become uncomfortably dry.

Ill-Fitting condoms also reduce the amount of pleasure and sensation; this is why men seem to think that sex with a condom is less pleasurable. This makes people less inclined to use protection, the result of this is that there are more children being born into unwanted families and more STI’s (sexually transmitted infections) are being spread. What’s better than highly pleasurable, safe sex? This is easy to maintain if you find the right size condom.

Choosing the best condom size is simple. The average condom size will fit a majority of men comfortably (7inches long, 2 inches width, 5 inches girth) Magnum sized condoms are not much bigger; they are 8 inches long and 6 inches width. Large condoms work well for these men as they are not as restrictive as the average size. Snug fit condoms tend to usually be the same length as average condoms the only difference is the width. They are about 1.75 inches wide. These condoms are for men with less width; they will prevent any slipping off during sex and have less chance of excessive material ruining your pleasure.

You should always remember to also keep condoms in a cool, dry place to keep the reliability of the condom at the highest it can be. Also remember that the tip of the condom should have no air left in as there needs to be room for the semen if ejaculation occurs.

So next time you think sex with a condom is less pleasurable, think about checking your condom size!

Superheros Handing Out Condoms at Olympics

February 5th, 2010

In hope to reduce unwanted results of unprotected sex, an advocate for safer community will be handing out over 250,000 condoms at the Olympics in Vancouver as the event unfolds.

Caped crusaders led by Captain Condom will march to the streets to distribute lubricants, lip balm, hand heaters and glow sticks along with the condoms. The organizers of the outreach organization called SafeGames 2010 will be handing out “safe kits” as well, both to the participants and visitors, as well as to the Vancouver locals. Among other giveaways would be DVDs, information cards, & also referrals to the city’s local service providers and resources.

The “safekits” will be distributed amid marching bands which will be highlighted by giant condoms on stilts and a circus-like parade. Safegames 2010 official Luciano Collona said their group wishes to convey their serious intent to reduce harmful results during the whole Olympics event which tend to get out-of-hand at times.

“Along with the fun of the Olympics are some loose and excessive drinking and partying, which oftentimes go beyond travel plans,” Collona further explained. “That is why Methadone Man, Pink Storm, Epidemiology Guy and the Caped and Always Protected Crusader would be of great help to both visitors and locals.”

Collona explained that these superhero-clad advocates will be hitting the streets and will prove to be a great attraction and medium of the campaign. Some twenty other community-based groups and government and private business sectors of Vancouver have rallied along to support the cause. The city of Vancouver also pitched in $20,000 for the movement, along with Open Society Institute.

The whole concept is patterned after the Safe Games 2002 in Salt Lake City where similar activities were pursued by the advocates. As for Vancouver this year, sex shops are concocting ideas such as discounts and free sex-toy guides for accredited media and participants. Some shops are also offering athletes free “slip kits”.

Collano said they are bent on making both sports and sex work positively and safely during the course of the Vancouver Olympics.

Increased HIV Testing In South Africa

February 5th, 2010

South Africa has one of the highest HIV infection rates in the world. It is believed that increase in testing is due to the South African awareness programs and campaigns. These were the findings of the second South African national HIV/AIDS 2009 survey. The survey was conducted in all nine provinces. The nationwide survey found that HIV testing has increased considerably (from 24% to 60%) over the year prior to the survey among South African men. There has been a dramatic increase in HIV testing, especially among males.

Of those in the 15 to 24 age group the increase in the percentage of men who got tested nearly than doubled and the percent of women who got tested more than doubled in a three year period. About 61% of all sexually active women and men were tested. Approximately 78% of women and 75% of young men between the ages of 16 and 19 were tested.

The study also found that most South Africans believe that faithfulness will protect them from HIV. The study also found that the percentage of respondents who believed faithfulness was a way to prevent the spread of the virus decreased over 13% in the same three year period. It was determined that people in long term stable relationships were less likely to use condoms.
About half the women interviewed did not use condoms when involved in one night stands and most women and men thought that cheating was pervasive and the norm.

The study also found that it was uncommon for South Africans who were younger to be in a stable relationship. Most young men seem to have multiple partners and usually have more casual relationships. It appears that it generally takes a much longer time for people, especially men, to get involved in a relationship which is stable. South African women and men were not likely to settle down into a stable relationship until they were in their late 30s. The biggest reason for this was alcohol because when South Africans were drunk, they seemed much less inclined to worry about contracting HIV. There also seemed to be some perception that alcohol consumption would somehow lower the risk of contracting HIV.

Approximately one out of every 10 people began having sex by the time they were 15. This put many young women at high risk of HIV infection. However, condom use was quite high among those young people (especially males) who were in casual relationships. It is estimated that the AIDS communication programs reached approximately 90% of the population and more young people than the older ones.

Durex Profits On The Rise

February 5th, 2010

The addition of a new type of condoms and sex toys has lifted the growth in sales at Durex to a record 10%. SSL, the owner of the Durex brand, has promised further growth as it launched a new line of sex aids for men which will be available in Boots and Tesco.

At the beginning of this year the company backed out of talks to launch the Durex Play range of vibrators over concern of a conservative backlash. It would appear, however, that these kinds of products such as these are gradually gaining marketplace acceptance.

SSL also claimed that the global market share of Durex had risen to approximately 30% following strong growth in Eastern Europe and the US, and as the result of the launch of innovative condoms, such as Tingle, which is coated with a lubricant that gives a tingling sensation, and Pleasuremax, which is ribbed.

Shoes and Sex are apparently still selling well for SSL International which is the firm that makes School footwear and Durex condoms. The company announced that with the help of acquisitions it was confident of increasing earnings per share by 50% in the three years to March 2012.

Until June 2013, SSL has agreed a new banking facility of £410 million which will replace a £220 million facility. The firm also said that it was aided by investment in promotion and advertising and that the first half sales growth in its consumer brands had continued, despite the difficult trading environment.

It appears that both Scholl and Durex continue to perform as expected and the recent acquisitions are growing well. Scholl foot care and Durex condoms owner SSL International also said today that sales were continuing to grow in spite of difficult trading in many countries.

The former Soviet Union is among the recent acquisitions of the group and is now their second biggest condom market is performing well ahead of expectations. The London based company, whose biggest UK base is at Trafford Park, also said growth was the result of continued promotion, advertising, and investment in innovation.

Condom Crackdown

February 5th, 2010

PRAMPI Makara municipal and district health officials have said that they have renewed their crackdown on market vendors who were selling sexual enhancement drugs and condoms.

Four vendors were detained briefly following a raid, and police found hundreds of sexual enhancement drugs and condoms. Neither the drugs nor the condoms were illegal, the vendors had to be re educated by health officials about the risks associated with selling  condoms since many of them had expired expiration dates and the drugs should have been prescribed by doctors.

These vendors now have signed contracts which state that will stop working in this kind of business. There have been 37 such raids conducted since November 2008. However, these crackdowns are often a double edged sword and are not without their drawbacks.

Every night as the sun sets, prostitutes begin looking for sex clients at a Phnom Penh public park, where they have worked for the past 10 years. Until Cambodia passed a new anti trafficking law, they used to carry a condom always, however, a new provision in the law which bans public solicitation of sex has made that much more difficult. Carrying a condom is now evidence of a crime. If a prostitute is caught with a condom by the police they accuse the woman of disorder and prostitution and disorder.

As a result many of the prostitutes have stopped using condoms as they are afraid of being arrested. The penalty for this crime is one to six days in prison and a fine of 3,000 riel, or about $0.75.

Although the penalty is small, sex works and human rights organizations say that the new law has been an obstacle to another government initiative, the 100% use of condoms in the sex industry, which was declared in 1999. This initiative has been made impossible by the new law. The new law forces prostitutes and sex workers to move from one location to another and the moving targets make it very difficult to promote condom use.

Another problem is that many customers are not willing to use condoms because If they do the customers feel that they we are prostitutes. The new law puts sex workers at risk of HIV. The stricter the law the more widespread HIV/AIDs becomes.

Celebrity Big Brother Condom Scandal

January 18th, 2010

Celebrity Big Brother, a reality series on channel 4, had already seen a small amount of drama before the show aired.  Apparently two of the contestants had packed condoms in their bags, in preparation for “getting lucky” while spending their time in the Big Brother household with other housemates.

Oddly enough, this most recent airing of Celebrity Big Brother was supposed to be built around a theme from Dante’s Inferno which includes the house having no spaces available for the housemates to have private quarters.  No solitude, no privacy.  Bringing a bunch of condoms into a house with no privacy seems like a waste of time.  The contestants bags are always searched prior to them being able to enter the house and two of their contents were found to have the condoms.  Other contraband that would be detrimental to the production of the show is normally removed however the condoms were left in place and are now within the house in some unknown contestant’s bags.

Of course, if someone were to get lucky during the filming then it would probably increase the show’s ratings which are most likely why the condoms were allowed to enter the house in the first place.  Not to mention I am sure the producers would want to promote the use of safe sex practices rather than have to explain to the media why someone was not allowed to bring their condoms with them.

Some speculation has pointed to Dane Bowers and Basshunter as the culprits that carried in the contraceptives but it truly may remain a mystery until the end of the show, if it ever comes to light at all.

Whoever brought them in, good for them.  The media might be making a joke out of it but safe sex and proper condom use is no laughing matter.

RWANDA: New campaign to boost condom use

January 18th, 2010

The Rwanda government has been working on a program to provide male and female condoms to their people at a much lower cost, helping to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

Studies show that sexually active people in Rwanda only use an average of three condoms a year.  The program should last approximately three months and began in December of 2009.  The primary focus will be on high risk individuals such as people who work in the sex industry or unhappy couples.

Currently condoms are available at reduced costs for males and free for females.  The male condoms cost much less than a loaf of bread.  Researchers have found that many people complain that the condoms are breaking which leads them to believe that the people using the condoms could benefit from better training on how to use them properly.

Another issue they are having when trying to get people to use them is the fact that condoms are still associated with promiscuous behaviors which tends to have people from stable relationships balk at the idea of using them.  Also, they are more difficult to come by for people that live in rural areas.

Some of the cultures in Rwanda also are firm believers in women being submissive which causes a great deal of issues when related to the use of the female condoms.  It then lies with the male to make the decision on whether or not to use protection.  In 2006, the Ministry of Health reported distributing over 830 thousand male condoms and only a little over 2400 of the female condoms.

The government hopes that the distribution of free condoms and reduced cost condoms will help reduce the infections by up to 50 percent however it will be important to also educate the people on safe sex practices such as abstinence and consistent condom use, as well as maintaining faithfulness to just one partner.

Chlamydia test kits in party bags

January 18th, 2010

Home pregnancy tests are easy to come by.  Apparently, home Chlamydia tests are also fairly easy to come by as well.  Just ask Andrea McLafferty, mother of Danny McLafferty, who happened upon quite a few Chlamydia test kits for her son’s 18th birthday party.

These days it is a normal occurrence to hand out goodie bags to all of the party goers as they’re leaving, ensuring nobody leaves empty handed.  Andrea placed the home Chlamydia test kits into goodie bags along with condoms and pregnancy tests as well.

Chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases with a reported 1 out of 10 people, under the age of 25, having been infected.  With the home Chlamydia test kits, it’s possible to send in urine samples to a lab and have the results sent back to the person via telephone, text, or post, making it very convenient and somewhat private.

According to Danny, he knows of quite a few of his friends that would normally have not been tested but thanks to his mother, they used the test kits from his birthday party and sent them into the lab to get their results back.  Since Chlamydia does not always present symptoms, many times young kids would not go to a clinic due to them thinking there was nothing wrong with them.  All of Danny’s friends at the party agreed that it was a great idea for his mother to have put those kits into the goodie bags.  Danny’s parents also agreed.  When the packages were unwrapped, they even so much as cheered with joy at the notion, agreeing that it could help to promote safe sex and make the teens become more aware of sexually transmitted diseases.

Andrea called a few Chlamydia Screening Programmes where she picked up the free tests along with the condoms, bags, and pens that advertised the services.
