Gay Relationships with Agreements More Likely to Prevent HIV Spread

A recent study in the San Francisco Bay area reports that gay men that have an understanding regarding sex in their relationships have stronger bonds, more trust, and better safety against the spread of HIV. 566 gay men in the San Francisco Bay area were questioned. Results showed that 99 percent of these males had sexual agreements in their relationships. The term “sexual agreements” refers to the understanding that certain rules are in place regarding the sexual encounters outside of the relationship. While this agreement does not necessarily require being monogamous, the agreement makes the topic of sexual partners up for discussion, which is a crucial aspect in protection against the spread of HIV. Additionally, such agreements help strengthen the bond in a relationship.

Cash Payments for Safer Sex Pays Off in Two African Nations

A recent study has examined the results of two of the World Banks most prominent programs against the HIV and AIDS epidemic in two of Africa’s most struggling nations. In Malawi, the Bank has been issuing cash payments to young female students for their constant attendance in school. In Tanzania, a similar program extends to men as well, offering both genders a cash reward for avoiding unsafe sex habits. The study shows a stable drop in infection rates, proving that this creative approach to the fight against AIDS and HIV in developing nations may just be working, and could be something that would be successful elsewhere.

Rising HIV Levels Blamed on Excessive Drugs Use

Throughout Eastern Europe and Central Asia, an HIV epidemic is claiming the lives of young people and it is a problem that is escalating rapidly. From statistics gathered by the United Nations Children’s Fund also known as UNICEF, this is an alarming rate and one that should be investigated thoroughly.

One in Seven London Gay Men is HIV Positive

Statistics show that an astounding one in seven homosexual men in London is HIV positive. A new campaign has been launched since these statistics have been made public urging gay men to protect themselves against this virus, and to stop the figure rising any higher.

HIV Rates Rise Over 60% in Over 50′s

England, Northern Ireland and Wales’s HIV infection rate for people over the age of 50 has more than doubled within the past decade. The 299 cases of HIV infection back in 2000 has raised to 710 in 2007 and these figures do not look like slowing down. Surprisingly, this number has increased faster than those in the younger age group.

African Youth Cause for Decline in HIV

Many of Africa’s nations are raising the bar higher in the fight to prevent AIDS and HIV in their countries. In a study by UNAIDS this year, it is speculated that sixteen of the most plagued countries should hit the 25% HIV reduction mark by the end of this year. The nations that have already achieved this goal (The Ivory Coast, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Namibia) are set to be joined by The Bahamas, Lesotho, Swaziland, Burundi, Rwanda, and Haiti by the end of 2010. This is welcome news to a people struggling to fight decades of the disease and its further spread.
