New Warnings on Condom Packaging

This page talks about the idea of having warning signs on condom packaging, like on cigarette packets, and alcohol bottles. The warnings will include percentages and figures about the reliance of condoms. All our lives we have believed that condoms are contraception and as long as we use them we are safe from STI’S and HIV/AIDS and also have no risk of pregnancy. Wrong. Condoms are almost 100 % effective when it comes to pregnancy, but not quite.

Condoms are 95% effective against unwanted pregnancies but only 85% effective for the prevention of HIV/AIDS. I’m sure that this will be a shock to quite a few of you in the public, as these low figures have never really been broadcast. “Cabral” thinks the idea is okay. They agree that these figures need to be out there in the publics mind.

The Catholic Church has tried to fight for the ban of all condom advertisement, and maybe on condoms altogether. This is simply impossible, not only will it increase the population of the world drastically, it will increase the amount of abortions, which the government can’t afford, and it will increase the number of AIDS carriers. The Catholic Church do need to take into account the fact that condoms not being available will not stop people having sex, but will simply make the dangers of sex worse. The way it is going it is going to end in a fight between the Church and the government.

Countries such as Thailand and Cambodia have both been on the 100% condom use programme, but this only backfired and rates of HIV/AIDS in the local areas actually rose quite dramatically in the years after.

What do you think of the idea? Do you think it’s a good idea to have the warnings present on the packaging? Do you think it will scare people into wanting a different kind of contraception or do you think people need to know the reliance of any product they use before purchasing?
