In hope to reduce unwanted results of unprotected sex, an advocate for safer community will be handing out over 250,000 condoms at the Olympics in Vancouver as the event unfolds.

Caped crusaders led by Captain Condom will march to the streets to distribute lubricants, lip balm, hand heaters and glow sticks along with the condoms. The organizers of the outreach organization called SafeGames 2010 will be handing out “safe kits” as well, both to the participants and visitors, as well as to the Vancouver locals. Among other giveaways would be DVDs, information cards, & also referrals to the city’s local service providers and resources.

The “safekits” will be distributed amid marching bands which will be highlighted by giant condoms on stilts and a circus-like parade. Safegames 2010 official Luciano Collona said their group wishes to convey their serious intent to reduce harmful results during the whole Olympics event which tend to get out-of-hand at times.

“Along with the fun of the Olympics are some loose and excessive drinking and partying, which oftentimes go beyond travel plans,” Collona further explained. “That is why Methadone Man, Pink Storm, Epidemiology Guy and the Caped and Always Protected Crusader would be of great help to both visitors and locals.”

Collona explained that these superhero-clad advocates will be hitting the streets and will prove to be a great attraction and medium of the campaign. Some twenty other community-based groups and government and private business sectors of Vancouver have rallied along to support the cause. The city of Vancouver also pitched in $20,000 for the movement, along with Open Society Institute.

The whole concept is patterned after the Safe Games 2002 in Salt Lake City where similar activities were pursued by the advocates. As for Vancouver this year, sex shops are concocting ideas such as discounts and free sex-toy guides for accredited media and participants. Some shops are also offering athletes free “slip kits”.

Collano said they are bent on making both sports and sex work positively and safely during the course of the Vancouver Olympics.
